Honor Roll – Fall 2019

Connecticut Magazine’s 2019 Best Doctors issue includes 48 UConn Health physicians, while six UConn Health dentists made the magazine’s Top Dentists list.

Nancy Dupont, MPH, BSN, RN, received the 2019 Association for Professionals in Infection Control and Epidemiology (APIC) Chapter Leader Award for her achievements in developing the APIC New England Chapter member community and in advancing infection prevention.

Dr. Cato T. Laurencin was the first UConn Health faculty member to be elected to the American Academy of Arts and Sciences.

Dr. Jacqueline “Kiki” Nissen received the 2019 UConn Health Board of Directors Faculty Recognition Award.

At its annual meeting, The Academy of General Dentistry honored Dr. Hsung Lin with its highest, most prestigious honor, the Mastership Award. Clinical Assistant Professor Dr. Steve Ruiz received the Fellowship Award.

Dr. Andrew Arnold received the FIRMO Parathyroid Medal at MEN 2019: The 16th International Workshop on Multiple Endocrine Neoplasia for his research on parathyroid glands.

Dr. Marja Hurley was appointed to The American Society for Bone and Mineral Research Council.

The Research Society of Alcoholism has awarded Dr. Victor Hesselbrock its 2019 RSA Seixas Award for Service.

UConn Health faculty researchers Dr. Emily Germain-Lee, Dr. Se-Jin Lee, Dr. Annabelle Rodriguez-Oquendo, and Riqiang Yan, Ph.D., are among 24 newly elected members of the Connecticut Academy of Science and Engineering.

Honor Roll – Spring 2019

Dr. Cato T. Laurencin received the 2019 American Association for the Advancement of Science Philip Hauge Abelson Prize for significant contributions to the advancement of science in the U.S. In addition, he was honored among the “100 Most Influential Blacks in Connecticut” for 2018 by the State Conference of NAACP Branches.

Rheumatologist Dr. Naomi Rothfield, a founding faculty member of the UConn School of Medicine who retired in 2016, was honored with a lifetime achievement award by the Arthritis Foundation. The award will be named in her honor going forward: The Naomi Rothfield Physician Exemplar Award.

Dr. Carla Rash received the G. Alan Marlett Mid-Career Award from The Association of Behavioral and Cognitive Therapies in recognition of her significant contributions to the field of addictions research.

Susan Reisine, professor emeritus of the School of Dental Medicine, was named a 2018 Fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS).

Dr. Vijay Rathinam was named a 2018 Milstein Young Investigator Award winner. Awards are bestowed upon individuals who have made an impact on interferon and cytokine research early in their careers.

Dr. Nancy Day Adams, professor emeritus in the Department of Medicine, received the 2018 Robert G. Naris Award from the American Society of Nephrology. The award honors those who have made substantial and meritorious contributions in education and teaching.

Wizdom Powell, Ph.D., director of the UConn Health Disparities Institute, was named to the National Advisory Committee for the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation’s Interdisciplinary Research Leaders program.

UConn medical student Tiahna Spencer is one of 34 medical students in the U.S. chosen for the National Institutes of Health Medical Research Scholars Program 2018–19 class.

Dr. Bruce T. Liang, dean of UConn’s medical school, was recognized by The Asian Pacific American Coalition of Connecticut (APAC-CT) at its 2018 gala for his significant contributions to the welfare of the state’s Asian Pacific American community.

Dr. R. Lamont “Monty” MacNeil, recently retired dean of the UConn School of Dental Medicine, received The Fones Medal, the top award from the Connecticut State Dental Association (CSDA), at its annual meeting for his outstanding contributions and dedication to the CSDA and the profession of dentistry.

Paramedic Peter Canning, UConn Health’s emergency medical services (EMS) coordinator, received the Connecticut Department of Public Health Commissioner’s Award at the DPH’s 2018 EMS awards ceremony.

Dr. Rajesh V. Lalla is the new president of the Multinational Association of Supportive Care in Cancer. He will serve a two-year term.

Dr. Marja Hurley has been selected as a Fellow of the American Society for Bone and Mineral Research (ASBMR) Advisory Committee.

Dr. Cato T. Laurencin has been selected by The American Ceramic Society to present the Edward Orton Jr. Memorial Lecture at the 14th annual Materials Science and Technology meeting.

Dr. Cato T. Laurencin received an honorary Doctor of Science degree from the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai.

Albert Cheng, Ph.D., assistant professor at The Jackson Laboratory for Genomic Medicine, was named to Connecticut Magazine’s 40 under 40 list for 2018.

The UConn Health Board of Directors named Dr. Brenton Graveley Health Net, Inc. Chair in Genetics and Developmental Biology and Dr. David McFadden Murray-Heilig Chair in Surgery.

Dr. Christine Finck, UConn School of Medicine associate professor of pediatrics and surgery, was honored with a Women of Innovation award by The Connecticut Technology Council (CTC) for her research innovation and leadership.

Dr. Katherine Coyner was honored by her alma mater UMass Amherst with its Distinguished Achievement Award.

Dr. Juan Salazar, professor and chair of the Department of Pediatrics at the UConn School of Medicine, was named a member of the Vaccine and Therapeutics Subcommittee of the Tick-Borne Disease Working Group established this year by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services.

Liisa Tiina Kuhn, Ph.D., associate head and associate professor of biomedical engineering at the UConn School of Dental Medicine was elected to the American Institute for Medical and Biological Engineering’s College of Fellows.

Dr. Richard Fortinsky received the 2018 Leader in Advancing Research Award from the Alzheimer’s Association, Connecticut Chapter.

Dr. Andrew Arnold, Murray-Heilig Chair in Molecular Medicine and UConn professor of medicine, received the 2017 Boy Frame Award for Excellence in Clinical Research at the American Society for Bone and Mineral Research annual meeting.

Dr. Julian Ford received the Connecticut Psychological Association’s Outstanding Lifetime Contribution to Psychology award at the Association’s 2017 convention.

The Connecticut State Dental Association (CSDA) named Dr. Aditya Tadinada editor of its publications. Tadinada served as the Associate Editor in Chief prior to assuming the role of Editor in Chief of “The Communicator,” the CSDA’s quarterly publication.

For the third consecutive year, UConn John Dempsey Hospital was awarded the highest A-rating in patient safety by national nonprofit health care ratings organization The Leapfrog Group.

Kathy Novak, LCSW, was named 2018 Social Worker of the Year by the National Association of Social Workers Connecticut Chapter.

Dr. Mina Mina, UConn Health professor and chair of pediatric dentistry, was named a 2017 American Association for the Advancement of Sciences Fellow for distinguished contributions to the fields of craniofacial development and organ formation and regeneration, and for 25 years of service to the NIH and other organizations.

Dr. Linda Barry, who recently was appointed to the new role of Director of Multicultural and Community Affairs for UConn School of Medicine, is the Northeast Regional Representative to the Association of American Medical Colleges’ Group on Diversity and Inclusion Steering Committee.

Dr. Ivo Kalajzic was one of four awardees to receive a Supplements to Advance Research (STAR) award for 2017 from the National Institute of Arthritis and Musculoskeletal and Skin Diseases.

Reinhard Laubenbacher, Ph.D., was named an inaugural Fellow of the Society for Mathematical Biology.

Ephraim Trakhtenberg, Ph.D., assistant professor of neuroscience, won an Interstellar Initiative honor from the New York Academy of Sciences and the Japan Agency for Medical Research and Development.

Dr. Anthony G. Alessi has been inducted into the Connecticut Boxing Hall of Fame for his work to make the sport safer. He is the first neurologist to receive the honor.

A study of a surgical technique to restore shoulder joint stability known as the “J-bone graft” conducted at UConn Health under Dr. Leo Pauzenberger, a former sports medicine research fellow at UConn, with Dr. Augustus D. Mazzocca received a biannual Medi Award from the Society for Arthroscopy and Joint Surgery.

Radenka Maric, Ph.D., was named UConn’s vice president for research effective July 1, 2017. Maric was previously the CT Clean Energy Fund Professor of Sustainable Energy in the UConn School of Engineering.

Dr. Anthony G. Alessi received the 2017 President’s Award at the American Academy of Neurology’s 69th annual meeting, held this April in Boston.

UConn Health’s Board of Directors named Howard Tennen, Ph.D., the 2017 winner of its Faculty Recognition Award.

UConn Health had 34 physicians named to Connecticut Magazine’s 2017 “Top Docs” list.

Dr. Jane Grant-Kels was elected vice president-elect of the American Academy of Dermatology.

Dr. R. Lamont “Monty” MacNeil, dean of the UConn School of Dental Medicine, was appointed to a one-year term as chair-elect of the American Dental Education Association’s board of directors in March.

Dr. Augustus D. Mazzocca will receive the Arthritis Foundation’s Champion of Yes Prestigious Excellence in Medicine Award for 2017.

Kyle M. Baumbauer, Ph.D., has received the 2017 Award in Pain from the Rita Allen Foundation and the American Pain Society for his research on pain after spinal cord injury.

Dr. Linda K. Barry was named one of Savoy magazine’s Top Black Doctors for 2017.

UConn medical student Laura Hatchman and her faculty mentor Lisa Barry, Ph.D., received the Biomarkers and Frailty Best Paper Award at the American Geriatrics Society annual meeting held in May.

UConn John Dempsey Hospital was recognized with a Gold Plus rating, the highest for heart failure patient care by the American Heart Association. In addition, the hospital was added to the AHA’s Heart Failure Honor Roll for 2017.

Lakshmi S. Nair, M.Phil., Ph.D. has been elected a Fellow of the National Academy of Inventors.

UConn School of Dental Medicine has been awarded by Special Olympics Connecticut a 2016 Golisano Health Leadership Award of the Special Olympics and its major supporter, The Golisano Foundation.

Dr. Marja Hurley has been appointed a member of the Special Programs Committee of The Endocrine Society for a three-year term.

Four UConn professors, including UConn Health Emeritus Professor of Dental Medicine Dr. Arthur Hand, have been named fellows of the American Association for the Advancement of Science.

UConn John Dempsey Hospital is the only academic medical center in the state to receive an ‘A’ grade from The Leapfrog Group, the premier nonprofit hospital safety advocate in the nation, for fall 2016.

Dr. Stormy Chamberlain has been named the new Scientific Advisory Committee Chair for the Angelman Syndrome Foundation.

Dr. Johnny Wu has been appointed to the board of directors of the National Commission on Correctional Health Care.

Laurinda Jaffe, Ph.D., will receive the 2017 Pioneer in Reproduction Research Leadership Award from the Board of Scientific Counselors of the Frontiers in Reproduction Program.

Dr. Bruce E. Gould has been selected by the U.S. Secretary of Health and Human Services to serve on the Advisory Committee on Interdisciplinary, Community-Based Linkages.

UConn researcher Jianjun Sun received a $100,000 Grand Challenge Explorations Phase I award from the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation to pursue an approach to contraceptives without extreme side effects.

Honor Roll – Fall 2016

Dr. Montgomery Douglas has been elected an officer of the American Board of Family Medicine for a one-year term.

Dr. Marja Hurley received the American Society for Bone and Mineral Research 2016 Lawrence G. Raisz Award, in recognition of outstanding achievements in preclinical and translational research.

The Outpatient Pavilion at UConn Health’s Farmington campus, which opened in 2015, was named the best in ‘New Construction’ in the state by The Connecticut Building Congress (CBC). The honor was for exemplifying construction excellence and best practices in teamwork by project owners, architects, engineers, constructors, and trades.

Dr. Cheryl Oncken has been appointed Chair of UConn Health’s Department of Medicine. Oncken, an internationally known tobacco researcher who joined UConn’s faculty in 1994, brings to the position considerable administrative experience as the program director of the Lowell P. Weicker Clinical Research Center and director of Cancer Prevention and Control at the Neag Comprehensive Cancer Center.

UConn Health had 30 physicians represented in Connecticut Magazine’s annual survey of top doctors in Connecticut.

Dr. Peter C. Albertsen received the 2016 Eugene Fuller Triennial Prostate Award from the American Urological Association (AUA) for his contributions to the understanding of prostate cancer, most notably in epidemiology and statistical analysis.

Dr. Bruce Gould was named medical director of the Transforming Clinical Practices Initiative (TCPI) of The Community Health Center Association of Connecticut, Inc. (CHCACT).

Dr. Ernesto Canalis was appointed Chair of the Skeletal Biology Development and Disease (SBDD) study section by the Center for Scientific Review, National Institutes of Health.

Marc Lalande, Ph.D., founding chair of the Department of Genetics and Genome Sciences, is this year’s recipient of the Board of Directors Faculty Recognition Award,
honoring outstanding contributions to research, teaching, and mentoring

Dr. Suzanne Rose was awarded the American Gastro-enterological Association’s 2016 AGA Distinguished Educator Award.

UConn School of Dental Medicine has received national reaccreditation by the American Dental Association’s Commission on Dental Accreditation (CODA).
